Radial head fractures

Radial head fractures are generally classified as

1. Non displaced or minimally displaced

2. Displaced

3. Comminuted (multiple pieces)

4. Comminuted and dislocation of the elbow joint

Non displaced fractures are usually treated with a sling and early movement. Displaced fractures are treated with either sling immobilisation or surgery depending on the fracture characteristics and range of movement of the joint along with other patient factors.

If the radial head is not reconstructable with surgery it is replaced with an artificial radial head made with either metal or pyrocarbon. Dr McBride uses pyrocarbon radial head replacements to minimise the erosion on the ulnar and humerus as pyrocarbon has a stiffness similar to cortical bone and does not wear like metal can.
